Winter sun on two seas

Thailand’s islands are one of the great winter-sun escapes. On the Andaman coast, Phuket, Krabi and Railay, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and the Koh Yao islands are calmest and driest from November to April, when the north-east monsoon brings clear skies; from May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and swell, and some marine parks close. The Gulf islands, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, keep a different calendar: their wettest months are October to December, and the calm, dry season runs from January. We list only places we have checked against the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the MICHELIN Guide and each business’s own website.

Krabi and Railay

Cut off by cliffs

Railay

Andaman Sea·Island guide

Railay is reached only by boat: limestone cliffs close it off from the mainland, Phra Nang’s cave beach lies at their foot, and the dry season from November to April brings the calmest seas (TAT).
